When I think of art, I think landscapes. And I did see a beautiful Emily Carr landscape during my visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery on March 2, 2019. Last summer, I had the opportunity to hear gallery tour guides, with training from VocalEye, describe some of those landscapes to gallery patrons who are blind or partially-sighted. It made me realize all the little details I miss because of my limited colour vision. Yesterday, I attended another described tour at the art gallery and realized that audio description of abstract pieces was what I needed to appreciate art of that nature. The guides yesterday used tactile props to demonstrate the shapes and textures of prints and paintings we would be shown. What an effective way to make an art exhibit accessible to people with vision loss! Can't wait until the next described tour about French Moderns. Described tours are offered free of charge to patrons with vision loss at the Vancouver Art Gallery on the first Saturday of each month this year. If you've never thought art was for you because you're blind, give these free tours a try.
